Stick with AVG and read what Danuitti has written. Hats off to him.

Kaspersky is typically higher rated than AVG (both free and paid-for versions). Word to the wise-anti virus programs you (or your friend or whoever) download from peer 2 peer programs can come delivered to you with built in back doors and trojans. Everyone loves free software. But antivirus software is the one place we should all be willing to drop a few bucks as it will pay the most in dividends later on down the road. My personal choices for AV programs are:
Kaspersky
Bit Defender
PC Cillin

Kaspersky is your best bet.
AVG was put up to the test not too long ago maybe 3 or 4 months ago I can't recall exactly and it failed pretty badly at detecting quite a few in the wild viruses.

There is no BEST. Diversity is best. If we all had AVG, then the next virus would WHACK us all. (or Kaspesky) Because of the diversity, we have more safety.

But, I would steer people away from All - in - one security suites. Nobody does the best at everything.

I use Norton Antivirus for AV
I use SpyBot and Ad-aware for Anti-spyware
I use Zone Alarm for my firewall.
But I use my BRAIN to watch for threats, force regular scans and check for updates.

Good luck
