Get him an Xbox 360. Either system would be a good choice, but the Xbox 360 is the better deal. Besides for the innovative controller, the Nintendo Wii isn't much different from the PS2. The Xbox 360 is a system with games for kids and adults. Not to mention that Xbox Live has a system to where you can pick your gamer zone. Meaning there is Recreation(teens) Family(anyone) Pro(Clean, but not that clean), and Underground(adults only). Both systems are/will be great, but I do strongly suggest getting the Xbox 360.

wii is a simpler game that would be great for an 11 year old. The Xbox 360 is more advanced and probably better for someone 14 or 15 and over.
I'd buy the wii (still cool because it's new) and get an Xbox 360 is a few years.
The wii also works with GameCube games which are cheaper.

If I were you, I would go with the wii, especially if you do not have a high definition TV. The Xbox 360 is not a massive improvement on the Xbox other than incredible graphics (that can only be seen on a 1080p resolution TV or better). The Wii is an enourmous improvement on the Nintendo Gamecube and will definately have more age-appropriate games (Mario-types) while still presenting a variatey of games (Such as first-person shooters).
You should go through the pros and cons with him, and ask him what he would like!

Wii is better for his age group because it's Nintendo and it's designed more for kids his age. Xbox 360 is also a good system but alot of the games are made for online, so if you want him using Xbox Live talking to other users while playing, then that'd be more fun for him.

The wii is interative (eg. you can play tennis or golf with it), but the x-box wil in my head last a lot longer as in popularity and "coolness" of games. If I had a son....I would get him the x-box 360 just because i like it more and since I'm 12 I like it more than how the wii is sounding. Just seems like the 360 will be more fun.

The wii will have more games geared to people of all ages that are of high quality. Where as xbox360 will tend to only have mature rated games that are high quality so I would go with the wii. It will give you the option of you getting quality age appropriate titles. Chances are he wants the xbox360 for halo which probably isnt an appropriate game but thats for you to decide.

Wii looks like fun, with the motion sensor controller. Nintendo has a lot more kids game too. I think its cheaper too.
