I just started a new job. I will be on probation for 1 year. My supervisor told me to move in, and get comfortable, but I'm still unsure.

How long *should* I wait before bringing in personal belongings to warm up and personalize my workspace?

I don't know if this makes a difference, but this is a County Position and I'm not considered Clerical, or Managerial, but the Union classifies me as "Professional". Others in the department have personalized their area, but most have been there for quite a while.

The Department I am in, is new, only 8 months old, so 1 of my employees has been there less than 2 months and the other will be competing for a permanent position.

Neither of them have personalized their workspace.

Any professional advice would really be appreciated.

I would wait a couple weeks, just moving in stuff a little at a time. Personalizing your office space helps the work environment in my book.

I would wait at least a month. And move in things a little at time and wait a week between bringing new things in. Also find out what the policies are for this. Don't get carried away. It's not your home, it's a place of business.

Do iit incrementally. Your spouse's picture first, then your own calendar the week after, next your own custom mousepad, and just adding one touch at a time, but other than a picture of the spouse, always things you actually use to work. After you run out of strictly useful personalized items, then you've probably got your hooks in and can bring in the lavalamp.

i would bring in one thing a week ,until you have everything you want there, that way it is subtle and it won't stand out and ppl won't notice it as much but it will make you feel better...

Do not decorate it...You are not permanent yet and only on probation..If i were your boss and watched you personalize you space for a wek I would terminate you for wasting company time for personal frivolity...Keep you personl pix cards and stuff at Home where it belongs...Only use what the employer gives you and spend none of your own time or money on the employer lest you be tagged a ------------- by your peers....
