Cut and Couple. Measure twice, cut once, it works for any in the construction trades.
Other choice, and only one I may be inclined to do, is scrap what you have, if you can, and install new P-Trap and pipe all the way up. This way you can avoid any Coupling, and the job looks good as well as most important, works. In plumbing the best Form is Function.

How To Extend Pvc Pipe

You'll have to cut the pipe somewhere beyond 6 inches from the end so you can add a coupling and another piece of pipe you can then trim as needed to fit the trap.

A double end female coupling the proper diameter, will allow at least 3/4 inch on each side for spacing. If you're at exactly one inch and use the proper cement, and the feed isn't under anything but normal pressure or in your case just for drainage, the "patch" should work.

Cement both pieces but have everything else in place, prepared for an almost instant set.

like sandy says the best thing to do is cut out the old trap far enough back to coupling back into the new one.when using glue joints ALWAYS insert pipe into fitting until it bottoms out.never "shallow fit" to make up distance,it is something you will regret.i've replaced many that were done like that.
