Three years old. Serious. The children whom I worked with did better academically from the very beginning if we visited colleges and exposed them to the notion of higher education when they were toddlers. We had picnics there, attended science fairs, ect. They were more motivated then to get there themselves someday. But, more practically, the age to begin the screening process is around 16, in the event the student can opt for early graduation and transition over to higher education sooner.

my parents took me to visit college when I was very young ,and didn't know what was going on.
You should visit colleges just for fun as soon as you can in your sophomore/junior year. The sooner you figure out what you want, the easier the college process will be.
It will be easier as a Freshman because then as a junior you won't have to go on what I call "College trips". Where you visit 10 consecutive colleges in a short matter of time.

Starting as soon as you start having an interest in college is the best time, that way you are making sure to include all schools that you could possilbly have an interest in. Starting early will give you an advantage in the long run, because you will already have a good idea about the schools that you may want to attend, and ones that you know you don't want to attend! Happy searching!

As young as possible. It is a gret environment for learning at any age.
They have special programs at most for children not challenged enough in the lower grades or those that have special interests.
I was in some of these programs from 5th Grade on.
Helps in getting into a great school to if you are finacially challenged.
I got accepted to MIT with a grant. and I was trailer trash.
I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree. but I work hard.

Usually, you visit college campuses during the summer before the last year of high school.
