how many songs is one gig

It depends entirely on what quality the music files are and the length of the songs. When Apple gives a number of how many songs can fit onto an iPod, it assumes that the songs are 4 minutes long on average and in the quality that iTunes and the iTunes Store use as the default: 128kbps. If your music is higher or lower quality than that, or you listen to a lot of longer songs, that will change how many songs you can expect to have fit.

Just as a clarification on quality:
iTunes and most other music stores have music at 128kbps
Most pirated music releases that are "scene" releases are 192kbps
Windows Media Player and some other media players default to higher settings (for instance 160kbps for Windows Media Player)

Considering where your music is coming from (downloading scene releases, buying music from iTunes, ripping your own CD's in Windows Media Player, etc.) you can expect the "Apple estimate" to change. For the record, Apple claims that 1 GB = 240 songs based on the 4 minutes/128kbps rule.

a gig is an appearance or series of appearances.
As in, playing a gig at the Fillmore, or
I had a gig opening for another band for awhile. I don't know where 200 or 240 comes from.Even the Beatles didn't have 240 songs, fer crying out loud. (Why didn't you say Gb?) I used the original definition seeing this is under music, not computers. 0

one gig is 1000 times one million bytes
one song is usually about 3 to 4 million bytes
so between 250 to 333 songs

It depends on how long the songs are. A 3 minute song would take up around 3-5 megabites of storage space. so you could likely get around 250 songs with 1064 megabites ( 1 GB) of storage space.
