Most graphic designers use mac!! The most popular program for image editing is defenately photoshop! Thought that this is a pc program? You will be suprised but a new version comes up first in mac and much later in windows unlike other programs!
If you are looking for an alternative which you can download for free I recommend gimp, which is very strong although it might take you a while to get used to its interface.

If you don't want to spring for photoshop, try the shareware program GraphicConverter. It's extremely powerful, and you can register it for something like $30.00.
