Quitting is not an option at this time. I like the work but cannot stand the boss who does not understand the job and doesn't provide leadership.

Honesty is a remarkably powerful option here, both with yourself and with your boss. There is risk / benefit to consider both on the side of taking action, or accepting the circumstances and focusing on not letting your contempt for your boss interfere with your job satisfaction.

I believe strongly that if you have contempt for your boss, your best move no matter how difficult, may be to bite the bullet and move on to another company. Contempt is a very strong emotion - could your boss really ever redeem himself in your eyes? If you can't change things at your company, and you are not willing to leave, then you need to give yourself permission to take your situation with your boss in lighter terms.

Try talking to your bosses boss, but that could quickly back fire if your boss's boss thinks you are the problem, not your boss

I've got a difficult boss too! She not only does not have leadership quality, she doesn't even know what she wants. She changes her mind faster than the change of weather. Instructions were never clear. My attitude is to deliver what is expected. Report to work on-time and leave when the clock clicks 5.30pm (or whatever your after work hour is). Speak less and don't give suggestion even if its the best opinion/solution to an issue becos its just not worth it! You'll never get the credit. In conclusion, it's only a job! Best wishes.

You like the job but not the boss, it is a dilemma. As a common rule, boss is never wrong, we can't tell the boss what is right or wrong, what we can do, is feedback him/her what you are doing and appreciate him/her with your charm until he / she can recognize you, that you are right. If you succeed in doing this, you are not only winning your boss, but you are winning yourselves. Good luck.
