It sounds like the shortcut has for some reason been redirected...
There are a couple of fixes, but unless you are confident at fixing via the registry, I would suggest using TweakUI to restore the function. Can be downloaded from Microsoft - link below.

Are you certain it's a search window, and not Windows explorer (not Internet explorer)? This is the window that shows you what files are in the drive.
If you're opening a search window, then Windows must have somehow been instructed to open Search on double-click, which might mean a registry problem.

That's very strange. When you double click on the "C" drive, it should open up the folder. It sounds as if your computer is looking for it. How strange.....
