Hi Forever Mine, There are good machines in both the top and front loader categories. Of the Front Loaders: According to Consumer Reports, in their last test of front load washers the Whirlpool Duet Model WFW94XEH was selected as the top rated machine with a score of 87 out of 100. However there are several highly rated machines you should consider, such as the Samsung WF511AB with a score of 86, The Kenmore Elite model 4172, with a score of 85, and the Maytag Maxima model MHV6000X, with a score of 84, and the LG WM3875H, with a score of 80 out of 100. So as you can see there are many good models out there. I would consider price as well as reliability when selecting a machine. Consumer Reports reliability survey indicates the LG and Samsung machines are the most reliable, followed in order of reliability by Kenmore, Whirlpool and Maytag. Top Loaders are just as good! Also there are many good top loaders available now. LG and Maytag machines are at the top of Consumers Reports ratings. We sell both at the Home Depot. Modern top loaders are very efficient, require less maintenance than front loaders and pedestals which cost as much as $250.00 each for front loaders are not necessary for them. Things to consider when you are shopping: Consider the price and reliability of the machine as well as the service offered by the retailer. Will the store stand behind you if there is a problem? Does the store offer free delivery and haul away? Will the store exchange the machine if a major problem develops within 48 hours? Home Depot offers all of these services and the lowest priced extended warranty in the Industry! We sell the GE, LG and Maytag brands and offer you the best service and guarantee your satisfaction. I hope this information is useful to you. Mike, The Home Depot Answer Man

Here are personal recommendations...
1) Kenmore:
I've owned one for over a year and love it. It's affordably priced and is very reliable.
2) Bosch:
My mom has owned it for several months and totally loves it. It's a high-end machine that is very reliable. Apparently, the wash cycle is a bit long.
3) Maytag:
My mother-in-law has owned a stackable unit for two years and loves it. Despite bad reviews, she hasn't had an issues with her machine and loves how it is very quiet.

Stick with the kenmores, whirlpool. Because they are the most common over the last 25 years, and parts are and will be more abundant down the road.

Front loaders take forever to wash a single load. Not good for the time poor.
