It's o.k. You'll just wear a gown. I have a female doctor too. It's no big deal. I worried about getting aroused too, but it happens so fast, you won't have time to. They know what they're doing. Just relax.

RE:
Nervous Male Getting a Physical Exam by a Female Doctor?
I have an annual physical scheduled with my female doctor. Up to now I've only seen her for colds and simple things; never had to undress. I'm sure she will do a testicular exam and a prostate test. Does anyone know if it is normal for me to have a gown? In the past, my male doc had me...

why people are so intimidated by doctors i'll never understand. They work and get paid by you. If you are a woman you got to be nuts getting a full body physical by a male doctor. Of course if the woman is attractive the doctor will get sexually aroused and get get paid for his enjoyment. After all they are men first ans doctors second. Simply demand a female or change your appointment. I'd never let my teenage daughter get examined by a male pediatrician. It's not but it should be crininal id the girl is uncomfortable and worse than that the doctor might enjoy it..

You will probably have a gown, and there may be a nurse or medical student present.
First and foremost remember your doctor is a professional. Male or female, your doctor had to endure *YEARS* of medical school, working with cadavers, internships and residency in an accredited curriculum before you even had a chance of meeting her.
It's perfectly normal for you to be nervous, but realize you don't have anything she hasn't seen *hundreds* of times before. Doctors are experts of human anatomy, unflattering as it is, you're just a collection of parts and diseases to a doc.
Should you get aroused, odds are pretty good she won't make a big deal out of it. It happens. It's a normal physical response to somebody touching in that area. If it does happen, know that nobody is going to know about it except for you and your doctor. Try not to get embarassed. Worse case scenario she'll leave the room for a minute or two and let things get back to normal before she continues. Much more likely the "downtown" part of the exam will only take a second - not enough time to get or stay aroused, and then she'll be back to looking in your ears and what-not.
My brother had to put a catheter in a man before surgery. My brother is a giant ex-marine looking guy and he was treatng a small middle-aged businessman. The guy kept saying he hopes he doesn't get aroused and my brother kept telling him, "Dude, don't get worked up about it. I'm just doing my job, relax and let me do it. If it happens, it happens."
Hope that helps,
Odd

You can request a male chaperone. (what - are you gay? why do you want a guy in the room with you and two chicks?)
I think the best thing to do is to come out with it early and explain to the doc that you feel uncomfortable.
I must admit, while I have heard many stories of male doctors going for the TUBEs (totally unnecessary breast examinations - you know, it's so sad that we even have a NAME for it) I have never actually heard of a female doctor being unprofessional in that manner.
Either they are better at hiding it than the guys or they are more able to be professional.

Why can't you switch doctors? You are able to do it, and if it's an insurance problem, the insurance companies cannot by law make you have an exam with a female doc, or anyone else who makes you uncomfortable.
Seems like a lot of people here are telling you that you "SHOULDN'T" be concerned. Nonsense. Your feelings are valid about this, and if you don't want a female doc, then that's YOUR CHOICE, and you should not be FORCED to be examined by a female, if you don't want to be.
Yes, I know for centuries women have been examined by male docs. But it's 2006 now. And this gentleman DOES NOT HAVE TO submit to this exam because of some "payback" for all the years that women have been examined by men. Not his problem.

I'm a male and feel I would be very uncomfortable. I know, doctors are doctors and I'm being juvenile, but how many women are comfortable with a male nurse when it comes to mammograms or catheters? Does the mantra "only another woman can fully understand the needs of women" ring a bell?

If there was no nurse present for your previous exams I don't see any need for there to be a nurse present for this one. If you will be more comfortable wearing a gown, just request one. As far as getting arouse, I've never known a man that could control that. Just try to focus on something that turns you off.
