At the airports there are Softbank (formerly Vodafone) NTT DoCoMo and AU rental services. You can rent a phone without reservation once you arrive in the airport. The rental counters are after the baggage claim and final customs inspections counters. The area is outside the controlled areas and in the common business area.

Although GSM standard phones work in Japan.

When u arrive at the airport, u should be able to see a counter which rents cellphone for visitors who need to use one in japan; as their network is different from other countries hence most ppl will need to turn to this for help.

Even with roaming services i believe japan is one country which u may not be able to use ur roaming there. I'm not really sure of the rates as i didn't make use of this service when i was there but i'm sure u could check with the ladies at the counter.Japanese working in the airport can speak better English than the rest, so not to worry i believe u should be able to communicate with them:)

Have a nice trip!!

Surely you must have one in your own country?
Make sure it's sim free and when you get to Japan, just buy a prepaid sim card and use that. You can get top-ups easily.
If you don't have a mobile phone, then there's a huge market there for new and second hand, so buy one, it'll all be much cheaper than a rental. Rentals are good for one or two days, not a month!

Just buy a pre-paid phone at a convience store for 7000 yen or so, and then toss it away when you leave. They may ask to see your alien registration card when you buy it, or they may not.
