If you are living in uk u can see that people luv PAY as you go or PAYG.
http://www.google.com/trends?q=pay+as+you+go%2Ccontract+mobile+phone&ctab=0&geo=GB&date=2006
But it depends upon you what is ur monthly av. usage.
Also if u r sms freak den go for contract phones.
You can try Contract Mobile Phones On
http://www.directphoneshop.co.uk
they r small playre's but offers cheap deals n they are accesible by free toll no's.
there are also other sites in uk such as BIG players CARPHONEWAREHOUSE,mobileshop,phones4u but
i think whats there in name.so go and try online

In my opinion I say prepaid. Paying bills is a hassle and if you dont end up paying it then they shut your phone off and it looks bad on your credit report after awhile.

If you were to go with pay as you go then I suggest Verizon INpulse.
They give you unlimited night calling to anyone in the United States (from 9pm to 6am), unlimited IN calling to anyone that has Verizon also (it doesn't matter what time of the day it is). 10 cents a minute to talk to people that aren't in the Verizon Network or if it isn't 9pm yet. They take 99 cents out of your account a day so you can use there unlimited things. Your paying around $30 a month and you can buy the Verizon INpulse cards in many stores.

Both - if you've got ntl. Found a deal as an ntl customer which means changing my service to Virgin but that was straightforward as they did it all, sent free sim etc, and for £10 a month I get 300 anytime xnetwork minutes plus 300 anytime xnetwork texts. It's like payg and contract combined because of the £10 dd, but you're not tied to Virgin for a set length of time, you can leave when you want. Go to http://www.ntl.com/ and see 'Virgin Mobile Offer', third box along.

I'm on contract, o2, i chose that as it worked out monthly about the same as when I was on pay as you go, except i got to choose a really good phone, that they'll then upgrade for free!

It depends on how much you talk and text.
If you don't talk or text much, Pas-As-You-Go is best. If you're like me and text and talk constantly, you should go into a contract. I've had pay-as-you-go and I didn't like it as much as the contract service. I've never used anything other than T-Mobile which has good rates.
