I would also say try http://www.lulu.com

It's a publish on demand site. You are in charge of everything from the book cover to the layout and every single page inside the book. Which is tough if you're not familiar with how to do this kind of stuff. But if you have the patience, it will pay off. I'm going to be publishing a book of my grandmother's stories with them.

Its free, and if your book starts selling(determine your own price), you get paid your portion once a month. You keep all the rights.

Post script to vc: You don't pay anything -service or materials - at Lulu unless you want to buy a copy of your own book.

You're gonna have to fork over a little bit of money, even going through traditional publishers. Not an outrageous amount, though. You'll need a pack of printing paper for your manuscript, ink and a printer or access to either of those, a word processor and computer (though if you're posting on here, I don't think that's a problem,) and lots of patience.

If you know what kind of book you want to write, find a similar book at the store and find the publisher. There are some publishing houses that produce more than just one type of book. Contact that publishing house for their guidelines for new submissions. Then, submit according to those guidelines. There's plenty of articles available online if you want to publish your work, and I listed my favorite in the source box. Those articles should give you all the information you need to make a good impression and break into the publishing world.

Just remember, there is a grand market for authors. Just go to Barnes & Noble and look at all the books available for purchase, and how many different authors are on the shelves. You should have no trouble getting your book published. :-)

Beware of those publishers who want to charge you specifically for publishing your book. There are many many stories of publishers ripping people off. It's all on that website.

Good luck to you!

How about publishing a book and making money? Why not shoot for that?

Of course, the easiest way is to create a literary magazine and get everyone on your eMail list to subscribe. Write to them and ask them for a dime or a dollar each. The content of this
'magazine' is your book in installments. eMail chapters of your book all the while saving them, of course, to your Word Program.

Authors used to publish their stuff in installments which eventually became independent books. The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde was published in fourteen chapters/ installments in an English magazine.

If you don't care to make money, then simply start sending chapters to your friends and eMail contacts, allowing them to be removed from your mass mailing if they don't want to read your work.

The other suggestions about lulu.com and such are good ones, but require that you pay for the service and materials. By keeping your book in cyberspace, you spend only your own time. If your work is interesting to your eMail list, you may figure out that going to a vanity press, like lulu.com or elsewhere might be an idea. Or take your work to Kinko's or other copy store and pay to have simple booklets made.

Define your goal. Do yo want to just get published or to be published in a serious way? Even Stephen King had to wade through many rejections before his work was eventually accepted.

You must submit your manuscript to a publishing house, such as Houghton Mifflin or Simon and Schuster. They evaluate your manuscript, and if they are interested, they PAY YOU for it.

If you have to pay anything for publishing, it is vanity publishing or self-publishing. I'd recommend self-publishing over vanity publishing, if you have the money to invest and the time and will power to push your own books. Otherwise, prepare for a lot of rejection letters (don't assume your book is bad just because some company doesn't want to publish it).

Purchase or check out at the library a copy of the book "Writer's Market." It will tell you a lot about different places you can send your book for publication.

You will have to have someone else publish it for you.
This is usually done with an agent, and a publishing house.
You will need to find an agent, and the agent usually submits your work on your behalf.

You can publish it yourself using print-on-demand publishing houses. They help you put the book together, market it, and print it. You hire them and pay them for their services. You can do an internet search for 'self-publishing' or 'print on demand' and you should get some companies to look into. But, you SHOULD look into them. Investigate the company. See their track record, and know right up front what they are going to charge you, and what you get for that money.

If you are spending money to publish a book, that is self-publishing or vanity publishing.

Otherwise reputable publishers that think your book will sell, will put you under contract and pay YOU.

if you present it to a publisher and they like it enough to publish it, they will pay you to publish them and you will get a certain percent of profit for every book sold. Be prepared to present it to many publishers as many might dismis your work.
