I was on birth control pills for 11 years when I got pregnant. The Pill works by suppressing ovulation so an egg is not released. The Pill also makes the cervical mucous thicker making it difficult for sperm to get through and changes the lining of the uterus so if an egg does manage to get fertilized it will not attach to the uterus. My other children were 18, 15, and 12 when our surprise baby was born. None of my doctors (I ended up a patient in the high risk/diabetes clinic since I was 38 and developed Gestational Diabetes) could explain how I could have gotten pregnant after so many years on The Pill. There should have been no ovulation occurring. It was such an intrinsic part of my life that I never missed a pill nor was I on antibiotics.
