Both units do the exact same thing, but they do it in a different way. The thing to remember is that nothing is free. You do not get "free" energy from the exhaust in a turbo application, however, some portion of the energy would have been wasted if the turbo was not there to capture it.
Generally speaking, a supercharger will give you a more instantaneous throttle response than a turbo will. This is because a turbo must react, or "spool up" before it can provide much boost, where as a supercharger is always spinning and just waiting for the throttle to open. However, both units create a lot of heat when they compress the air. The greater the boost, the hotter the charge. The hotter the charge the less dense. It is not impossible, but it is more difficult to cool the charge in a supercharger than a turbo, just by virtue of plumbing. It is pretty simple to route the hot air charge through an after cooler and take 100 degrees out of the charge before it enters the engine. So if the engine was bullet proof, a turbo could be used with an after cooler with better boost numbers and provide more power.
BUT A SUPER CHARGER LOOKS A WHOLE LOT BETTER DOING IT.

BOTH, you can increase boost on both to be "more powerfull". superchargers have to overcome HP loss due to haveing to run a belt. turbos have to deal with turbo lag. a supercharger will create HP gains aprox. linearly throughout the rpm range. a turbo will have turbo lag creating no or even negative HP gains at the bottom end but make up for it when the boost kicks in, and more efficient so less HP wasted on the top end. its a preference decision.

actually the best way to make use of these is to set them up with the same setup that a lot of older diesel engines(mainly in heavy equipment) had ..... they had a supercharger with a turbo mounted on top of it to feed even more air into it, then into then engine ..... it's like you're double boosting the engine

super chargers causes horsepower loss due to the fact it is belt driven in a smaller engine with less tourqe you should use a turbo but a v8 you would go with a supercharger

a super charger is more powerful it develops more horse power than a turbo does, all a turbo does is re-use the already heated exhaust to run back through the engine,a super charger blows an enormous amount of fresh air in to the engine forcing to to take more fuel and increasing the horse power tremendously i have drove drove both types of these and prefer the super charger good luck,i hope this help,s.

Supercharger, definitely. However, turbo is more efficient.

Both, under different conditions. The question is how much horse power do you want and at what RPM range? If you go to high you will also need to change your cam-shaft to take full advantage of the added horse power, also if your using an automatic transmission you'll more than likely have to change your torque converter as well.

Excellent Question. It totally depends on the engine itself. A turbocharger would be much more powerful on a subaru engine versus a mustang and vice versa
