When I bought my new Egyptian towels, the label advised against the use of fabric softener. I ignored this and yes, they began to lose their softness. I wrote to the manufacturers of the fabric softener, and since they didn't have anything to say to explain this, they apologised for my "disatisfaction" and sent me a very worthwhile money-off coupon for all their products.
Since then, I don't use fabric softener, but use an anti-limescale powder in the wash, with liquid detergent followed by half an hour in the dryer prior to hanging them up. The powder seems to be more effective (and more protective of the machine against limescale) than buying other separate or combined products and the powder is much cheaper than the pastilles.
I admit that the half hour in the dryer is probably a key factor, but it doesn't work as well if I use fabric softener.
Hope that you can understand this and that it helps.P.S. There are two makes of powder available, both of which are available from supermarkets.

Fabric softener and sheets make the towels less absorbant.
Every other load, add a cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. It removes all the soap residue and hard water build up which make the towels less fluffy. Normally, any scent of the vinegar will be gone after they are dry. If not, run them thru another rinse cycle of fresh water.
The vinegar brightens the colors, too. Try it on a load of blue jeans. You won't believe the difference, especially if you have hard water.

upload a bite of ZOTE cleansing soap interior a sealed sock or fabric bag and placed it interior the bathing device interior the final washing cycle; then rinse. Your towels would be soft and aromatic. Dry towels outdoors on a windy day for optimum fluff or, in case you are able to endure the noise, placed a tennis ball (confident, fairly) interior the tumble drier inclusive of your towels.

Use plenty of fabric conditioner, and maybe a little toilet soap The other way is to put them in a drawer and never use them
