I saw this in Dear Abby a long time ago: when someone asks you a nosy question, turn it around on them and say, "now, why would you ask that?"

People are born curious.

Nosy people are just highly curious people with lack of good manners.

I learned this tip from a book. For example, you've been retrenched and your nosy friend keep asking you, "How are you doing since being retrenched?"
Pick a simple short answer like "It's unfortunate but life goes on". Your friend will keep on probing, but keep repeating the exact same words in the exact same tone until he/she gets the message and backs off.

I recommend reading the book below. It has some simple but great conversation tips.
