We only have two outlets in the room (bedroom), but have several items plugged into each outlet to include a space heater. After a couple of hours we spell something burning and it is one particular outlet that is smoking. When taking the face plate off I noticed one of the two wires that are connected to the plug unit itself is kind of short. Is there a way to add an extension on it on a budget? I think that is part of the problem.

remove the old plug and cut back the burnt wires, wire nut on some good wire and replace the plug with a new plug, then electric tape the splice and screw plug back in the wall. To prevent this dont use so many appliances on one circuit and/ or add a power block with a surge protector kinda like the one you should have attached to your computer.

You are overloading the circuit.this is very dangerous. Hot wires=fire. You need to add another circuit to the room. If you have a breaker electrical box, add another breaker, run 14-2 with ground romex to the room, install an "old work" box and recept. Probably need an electrician if you never done before....good luck!

Ron R is right that the circuit is overloaded, the problem you have is why the breaker or fuse didn't trip before the wires started smoking. That is a major fire potential. Call a pro before you burn down your place and possibly worse.
