Actually, you ask an interesting question. Really old TV sets did have a channel 1. (This was back when TVs had a VHF dial that went to 13 - yeah, I realize most kids here are saying, "A VHF dial, what's that?") They dropped channel 1 because it had a frequency also used by ham radio operators.

Do a Web search on "Why no channel 1" and you will find Web sites that describe this in more detail.

I was told that channel 1 was the first channel, so what would be good enough to have that channel? The government. Channel 1 was originally government owned so they could make immediate announcements. Now, I'm not exactly sure why they took it off, but they probably stopped because no one was watching Channel 1, so how would they know when there was a problem? Plus, the news came on more often so the government decided to put breaking news if needed on news channels or all channels if needed.

Thats interesting !! My cable goes up to 999 but no channel 1? Channel 1 used to be UHF - meaning Ultra High Frequency - which is just another frequency for non-cable TV. If I remember right, we used to get a lot of our local channels on UHF or channel 1.
