I'm not racist or anything, but why is it that in school we have like "Black History Month" every year, and in English we read like every book about black people, and schools basically ignore the worst event in the world, the Holocaust. Now I'm not saying there shouldn't be a Black History Month, and I'm OK with that. But schools should do something about Jews too. I just don't think it's fair, because for hundreds of years people were horrible to Jews, black people weren't the only ones who were treated unfairly.

We had a HUGE section about the Holocaust in 8th grade. We read "The Devil's Arithematic" and kept journals about what we learned. We had to go on-line and do two research projects. I think it is taught at a higher level so kids can handle it better.

Perhaps it's because of the time differences between the two. Blacks were openly 'treated unfairly' as you put it, for hundreds of years and still face certain inequality issues that Jewish people probably don't face as often or as a direct result of the Holocaust (as with slavery)
There was a different kind of intervention that 'freed' the Jews so to speak, Black Americans played more of an active role to end their oppression, and it was a longer process.
I'm not at all downplaying the impact that the Holocaust had on the countless people that were affected by it, but I see some differences in each group's struggle afterwards.
And the schools that I went to surely taught us about the Holocaust... I think that Anne Frank is a staple in the American educational system... and I can remember reading other memoirs and novels throughout my schooling that brought awareness to the subject.
Maybe it depends on your school district.

I don't think that your question is offensive... it is an honest, thoughtful question. Kudos to you for having the b@!!$ to question the world. Intelligent people ask questions.

Unfortunately, the world is not fair and the United States has so many issues, that modifying the curriculum in schools only happens when there is money to support it. Celebrating your heritage does not take away from anyone else celebrating theirs.

It you feel that there are other important issues that you would like to see addressed in your school, bring it up with administration or start a petition. Maybe a club or organization could have a "day of memory" to honor the victims of the Holocaust.

Being black I would like to say that some people always over look such tradegies as the Holocaust and some people stay stuck in the past. When you should ne making more advancements in today's society. No tradegy is greater than any other and people do need to recognize things like that. Me, personally Black History Month has never benefited me. They stopped teaching it at my school in your Freshman year. But, I do understand what happened and I appreciate the people who fought my rights and others.

Well a lot of people suffered, but everything seems to have turned out all right in the end, and if you look back in history you can find all sorts of reasons to complain about all sorts of things but don't you feel it's time to learn and live and forget and move on?

I totally agree with you. Slavery was terrible, but more people lost their lives and their fortunes in the Holocaust. You should also ask why there is such a focus on Hitler and not Mussolini and the Facist Party? He killed almost as many people as Hitler but no one talks about him.
