Why is broadband described as an "always on" connection? I'm on broadband, and every time I come off the internet I always switch off the little box that connects me, so it's hardly "always on" is it?

What they mean is you can use your internet connection & your phone at the same time.
With a dial-up connection you have to disconnect the computer to use the phone.

It's a comparison to dial-up modems that you had to switch on and off in order to not use up more minutes than intended. It's a marketing ploy, really. Broadband costs probably about the same that dial up did 5-10 years ago, but you don't have to wait for a connection (at least not as long unless your computer really sucks)

even if you turn off the power, I'm sure you don't disconnect your cables. In which case, you ARE still 'always connected',

The term is a distinction between having to 'dial up' or simply 'switch on' to 'connect' to the Internet

It means you don't get periodically disconnected as dial up users are, and you have instant Internet when you boot up the PC

This is generally true.. But some phone companies offer this service with your same phone line. So when you sign off, your phone line is restored and is no longer being used by the internet. Heard of a service in Nebraska or somewhere there that uses the same method.

It's "always on" because you don't have to double-click on any program to connect it to the net (eg, like dial-up you have to click on the dialer to connect). For broadband, all you have to do is to keep the modem on and you're ready to go.

lol yea, it's "always on" because you just click your web browser and there it is. as opposed to clicking the dial up browser and waiting for it to find access numbers then logging it on and THEN being able to surf the net.

dont get THAT paranoid as to turning off your modem box dude. lol
