It is VERY important to NOT use Q-Tips. I had to learn this the hard way...
My ears used to itch a lot (because of allergies), and whenever I had too much earwax, I would use Q-Tips. However, I eventually felt my ears getting very dry on the inside, and sometimes putting Q-Tips in my ears would make them bleed. I went to a doctor to see what was wrong, and my ear canal was totally swollen. It hurt so bad. The doctor told me that the main cause was cleaning with Q-Tips, which irritates the ear canal. My doctor also warned me against ever using them to clean ears again.

Using Q-Tips may remove some outer ear wax, but it pushes most of it even farther back into your ear. This could lead to hearing problems ( due to the build-up of wax), which a doctor might have to treat.

My answer is to either A). Use an tissue wrapped around your finger to lightly clean the outer areas of your ear, or B). use an earwax remover.

P.S., when you use Q-Tips, it is very easy to go into your ears deeper than you should. This only hurts your ear, and if you're not careful, then you might even hurt your ear drum. So don't do it!!!

Dear Miranda, Why not? I use Hydrogen Peroxide( 3% ) strength. It's available from any chemist and you will need an eye-dropper as well. Try a couple of drops at a time in each ear, if it fizzes up that is a sign of an ear infection. If applied morning and night, within a week it should be gone. If no infection, then loosen wax with some warm oil or "Cerumol". Blessings !

How should ears be properly cleaned?
Normally, ears canals are self-cleaning and should not need cleaning with any devices or cotton-tipped applicators. Cleaning the ear can cause problems by pushing the ear wax deeper into the ear canal and against the eardrum. However, sometimes wax can accumulate excessively, resulting in a blocked ear canal. In the case of a blocked ear canal, consult your physician. He/she may recommend one or more of the following:

an irrigation of the ear canal to wash out the wax
a vacuuming of the ear canal to remove the wax
the use of a special instrument(s) to remove the wax
prescription eardrops or mineral oil to soften the wax
Always consult your physician for a diagnosis and for additional information.

I use Q-tips, but I am more careful now than I was before.
When I thought I was just getting excess water out of my ears, I was totally unaware of the fact that I was impacting the wax. I had to go to the doctor and get prescription drops to soak and loosen the wax for about a week. It was when I warmed up the drops a tad that the blockage finally "popped" and I could hear again. Alot of disgusting wax came out...thank God.

Q-tips but not to deep then it really hurts (personal experience)
I have also used those wax candles you can but at health food stores to clean your ears too. I guess they worked. And don't under any circumstances answer a phone with a q-tip in your ear !!! OMG the pain !!!!!!!!!!!

Yes, I do use the cotton swab, deep into the ears until I can hear it rubbing the eardrum, but maybe that is okay, since I am, after all, a doctor.

I usually use Q-tips but you shouldn't go in too deep. You could damage your ear drums.

I use Q-tips as soon as I get out of the shower, easier to clean.
