Master the standard format for "the five paragraph essay." Know it backwards and forwards and stick to the formula. Clearly expressed thoughts, coherently presented and purposeful is more important than tossing in hastily acquired vocabulary. When given a topic choice, go for the one with which you are most familiar. Check this link and good luck. And, read, read, read. If you can enlist help, ask somebody to read your practice essays who can be critical and honest.

Just taking practice tests, as some have suggested, will not improve your score. What you need to do is identify your weaknesses so you don't waste time studying what you don't need or what you are already good at. Make sure to review answers and explanations every time you take a test to understand what it is you're struggling with: is it the pacing, sillly mistakes, misreading the question, misbubbling the answer? For the essay, consider attending a free "Essay writing workshop" at your local Kaplan center to learn the rules of the "game". Also, don't ignore your math. Most schools will look at the overall score, so improving your math by 50 points (by being more careful, for example, or by reviewing some of the more complicated geometry) will benefit you just as much as improving your reading score by 50 points.

Commit yourself to studying 30 minutes a day, and taking a test every weekend, and you'll feel much more prepared on test day!

Just take a ton of practice tests and review. A lot of the same words tend to pop up. Also, Kaplan, and Princeton review are usually pretty good.

I would go to a bookstore and get a couple of SAT practice test books.
