Go to ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS in Control panel. Uninstall any toolbar or unfamiliar program. Go to Start/Run type in MSCONFIG. Uncheck EVERYTHING except absolute essentials, those being your antivirus suite and any software firewall you use. Applications such as printer monitors and scanner software do NOT need to run at startup for those items to work. If you hit File-Print, a document will print regardless of whether or not the printer software loads at startup. Only things that need to run are, as I said, antivirus and firewalls. If you use a UPS that can be left to run as well as that will not shut down your computer automatically if it's not running. Everything else can go! Other than that, defrag the hard drive, make sure you have enough ram (modern machines should have 1 gigabyte installed), and keep running Spybot and Adaware as well as regular antivirus scans.

Some applications don't show up in the start up menu. To find these click on start, run and type in msconfig.exe Click on the right-most tab (Startup) and look for duplicate entries. Also check for items that might acces the web like toolbars and turn them off. Restart and see if it helps.

Have you defragged it? Go to search and find the program. Click right side of mouse and make a duplicate to place on the monitor. Then click on it. It may take an hour to finish defragging.
