My answer would be, the definition is the belief that everything happens because somehow, it was "meant' to happen, so no worries. There's nothing you can do or not do to change it. It's very close to the belief of "Pre-destination" which has almost the same meaning, but is more "Cosmic" in nature.
I do not believe in either. I believe we have free will, and our actions determine the outcome, based on what facts we know, and the probability that any decision we make will be the correct one.
I believe attributing everything to "Fate" is something of a cop-out, relinquishing responsibility for our lives to something that is entirely illusion. Co-incidence, and imagination will meet sometimes, and give the impression it is "fate", when in reality, the probability of the event can usually be calculated when all available data is scrutinized. Even a 'one in a million' chance is still a chance.

Fate........... how your life is is fix by the cosmic or God. Where you are born (poor countries or rich countries), to what parents you are born to (rich or poor, educated or not), how you look (midget, ugly, beautiful or deformed ), your intelligence and how spiritual you are, are fixed if you believe in fate. You can change your life to a certain extent but not that much. People who managed to have their lives changed to a great degree
do so because they have accumulated good karma and it is also part of their fate.
I believe it and it is because of how you conduct yourself in your past lives. Your fate is due to your karma. If you had been a good person in your past lives, your will have good karma and your next life will be good. Your karma determines your fate. So if you conduct your present life well, you will have a good rebirth.

Fate is tied to ones destiny, it is the plan of how your life goes, the plan that God has set for ones life. I believe in it, I think everyone should.
