Pros. If they are married they get the same benefits as straight people do when they get married. That means that the spouse is considered in charge if something happens. So say, one of them dies, the funeral arragements are in the care of the spouse rather than in the care of the next of kin. Doesn't sound like too much of a big deal but not all families get along and it is possible to exclude someone from a funeral.
They also get the tax breaks that married couples get.
Cons. Some people argue that raising a child in a gay family situation is wrong. I personally don't believe that but some people will argue it to the death.

If this is a genuine debate then the official religious fundamental line is clear. Heterosexual marriage is a sacrament, a profound committment between a man and a woman, who intend to bring their children into this holy union sanctioned by God! Lesbian/homosexual marriage would goes against this sacrament as most religions have a line on condemning homosexuality as unnatural, and sinful. Some liberals are making feeble noises about same sex Civil Partnerships being ok, in the UK, but it is NOT marriage. It is a legal contract which tightens up next of kin status, and coupledom for bequeathing assets, benefit claims etc. Some argue that the very fabric of the heterosexual family would be under threat if lesbians and gay men were given more rights! Check out any fundamenatlist religious website for information. They spend a great deal of time worrying about what 'we' get up to! lol I am a lesbian, and joined in Civil Partnership with my longterm partner last year, and I would have preferred to have married her in a church, however, we took it very seriously, as did our family and friends, in a registry office. So, if heterosexual marriage is so sacred, why are so many people allowed to marry in bizarre and outlandish places and ways? Just a thought when you are preparing your debate. A more balanced approach would be to check out the UK's Stonewall website. Good luck with it!

Pro: Marriage for all would allow us to move on and work on the important things in life...like feeding people. the environment...you know things that should be important to so called Christians.
Con: The only con is that Gay people will realize that marriage isn't all it's cracked up too be.

being a christian who does not believe in gay marriages i am perplexed why this question is being asked. i know the government of Canada is going to debate this again, and i just see more of the same ******** going on. the charter of rights in Canada pretty well forces equality to all people whether it be colour of skin, religious believes etc. regardless of what happens it will end up in the supreme court of Canada who will no doubt say if its banned that it violiates their rights under the charter. so one way or another its here to stay in canada wether we like it or not. as a christian my view is that what they do is their business and gods and since i am a mear mortal man and not a god. i will leave it up to god to decide on judgement day,

I think they should call it something else besides marriage.
let it mean the same thing though and then they have to get a divorce when they want to break up as well

I dont think it matters where u live when two people are in love it should even matter that they're the same sex. LOVE IS LOVE SAME SEX OR LIVING IN OUTER SPACE.

who are we to to tell two people who love each other they shouldn't marry because they happen to be the same sex, outsider are wrong not the two who are in love

If the queers want to live together - let them.

Just don't bastardize the whole thing by calling it a "marriage".

Have we all lost our moral compases ??
