Let them call the police. If you have done nothing wrong, there is nothing to be afraid of. Then I would call your local labour board. Sign nothing....they need to prove you've done something wrong, such as video evidence.

Did you sign the papers? If you did you are in trouble. Get a lawyer, quick. The answer is they have a legal right to call the police to arrest you and request the money and suspend you from work IF they have proof that you took money. Now they have the proof in the form of a statement that you signed. As long as you are not guilty of the crime they have accused you of, all of thier actions are illegal.

I am not sure what happened in your case but I was a Regional Operations Manager and District Manager in retail for many years... If if I suspected that someone was stealing from me then I would just terminate him/her... One has to question the motivation that they have in trying to make you pay back. If you stole then I would want you out of there!... I would not let you pay back and keep you on because you may do it again.
Document everything... Write down on paper this whole incident... Be as specific as possible... Make note of time, dates people and what was said. Have someone witness what you wrote down and sign and date the paper... Also call your state labor board (look under government agencies in the phone book) and tell them what is happening.... You can call anonymously if you want but if you are really innocent it would be better to give your name so that should this go to court then you are covered. After you do all this then if they want to call the police then let them.. Your butt is covered!
Next thing that you should to is start looking for another job as soon as possible...

The police will only arrest you if your employers have strong evidence you committed a crime, such as a videotape or verbal admission from you. It sounds to me like they are trying to intimidate you into admitting something they believe you did. If you did or did not do anything wrong, DO NOT SIGN OR ADMIT TO ANYTHING. Make them prove it. The very most that can happen is the police will ask you to come down to answer some questions. If that happens, see if you can get a lawyer to go with you. It shouldn't cost much if he is just going down during an interrogation if it comes to that. If you are innocent, it should be easy enough to get out from under this.
Good Luck

If you did not do it never sign anything that said you did. They can dismiss you and escort you off the grounds but they can not keep you there. If this happens you call the police as they are holding you against your will. After that get a good lawyer and sue them. They can charge you for theft and take you to court, and they can also lose. Never sign and use your rights

Sign nothing! You should not take the blame for something you did not do. Have them call the police. You can later sue them for your wages if they do not pay you, and you can sue them for false arrest. They can call the police and you may indeed get arrested. But, the charges should be dropped becase there is no proof.

Even if you did sign the papers, you are not completely screwed. If you felt you were unable to leave without signing, if you were coerced, if you didn't understand the language and communicated this to them, it could be considered false imprisonment and that you signed them under duress. It all depends on the circumstances. It just sounds like they are trying to fool you, you have rights.

Hire an attorney.
To answer your question, while their request for you to admit you commited a crime may not be illegal, it certainly sheds light on the narrow-minded individuals in charge of the company's employees.
What is their "proof" that you took money?
