You couldn't work without your brain. It is responsible for everything you do - waking in the morning, remembering who you are and where you live and feelings of love, happiness or
sadness.

What does your brain do?

Your brain is a remarkable control centre. While you're reading this, you're also thinking, breathing and moving. Decisions, ideas, ambitions and dreams are all organised by your brain.

How does your brain work?

Your brain is the hub of your nervous system. It is made up of 100 billion nerve cells - about the same as the number of trees in the Amazon rainforest. Each cell is connected to around 10,000 others. So the total number of connections in your brain is the same as the number of leaves in the rainforest - about 1000 trillion.

Watching the brain work

Scientists can watch your brain working, using exciting new imaging techniques. Knowing how the brain works will help us understand how we think and what happens when the brain is damaged or affected by illness.

basically it is the control center of your body. it sends electrical impulses everywhere to tell your body to do things - everything from your heart beating to your hand picking up a pencil. it also does the 'thinking' part - such as when you asked this question. how the brain does all this is still to this day murky at best, because it is so complicated that it is still difficult for us to understand to this day. but in summary, your brain basically controls everything that you do - conscious and unconscious.
