Is your fireplace gas? If so is it new and are you a new user?
I would make sure that the vent is open for the fumes to exhaust out chimeny. 2nd you should have some sort of ignition button to push to light pilot. Unless you have a more advanced type that lights it for you. If not you will have to light it by turning the gas valve to pilot then push the ignitor to light pilot holding it for at least 1min after pilot is lit, then release and turn knob to on position. Then you should be able to regulate heat with a Thermostat. If this was installed recently by installer he should have instructed you on how to operate fireplace safely.

If it's gas heated, I think you'll find there's nothing to it. Regardless of which, make sure the chimney damper is open and the flue is clean.
And that you have a screen to keep embers from poping out onto the floor.
If a regular wood burner and you don't want to buy the easy to start logs you can get at grocery stores, do this.
1. Cut some dry kindling. That is split wood you have bought or cut and dried into thin pieces.
Crumple up a newspaper and place it in the fireplace, build a little teepee of of kindling over the crushed newspaper, With thicker pieces over the top.
Partially open a window to allow air to come in.
Light a match to start the newspaper on fire.
Once it gets going you can add bigger pieces.
Always be sure to cover the front with the screen when not working in the fireplace.

The first time ever? Number one thing to do is check the flue. It has to be open. If you're not sure if it is open, put it in one position and stick your head in the fireplace and look up the chimney. The flue is like a sheet of metal that when closed leans across the chimney. If the flue is open you are ready to proceed to the next step. Build your fire. Place the wood on the grate. One big log in back, small kindling in front of that and larger but not too big logs.,.. branch size, leaning on the back log over the kindling. If you have a fire started thingy, use it. You can get them in camping section. It's compressed sawdust saturated with wax or oil. It will really get a fire going. You can make your own with dryer lint and candle wax. Nice crafty thing to do with lint. You are ready to start your fire. Crumple some newspaper under the grate, right under the kindling construction you've built and lite the match. Good luck little pyro!!

What do you mean? How to build a fire? That's easy. Place the logs in a formation with wide base. I tear small bits of newspaper balled up and tuck in 2-3 corners of the pile then I light the paper and wait for the flame to spread across my pile.

If you are using the fireplace for the first time and it has not been cleaned, I would get it cleaned out by a professional. You don't want to fill your house with lots of smoke or have a fire when that birds nest clogging your chimney goes up in flames.

i asume you have a house with a working fire place. first get some dry wood and some kindling. kindling being wood split up into very small pieces you need a couple hands full. make sure the chimney is open then add the kindling to the fire place use some rolled up news paper to get the knidling going then start to add your wood a piece at a time as it catches fire keep adding wood until you got about five pieces of wood on the fire. then you sit back and admire the blazes and hope you can get warm from the fire.
anyone that says this will not work is full of mudd.

It is very important that you have some one check it before you start a fire in it , if it has not been used for awhile. The best way to get a fire started is to get some small pieces of wood , roll up some newspaper place it in the fire place then had the small pieces of wood of top of the paper , light it and slowly add small pieces of wood till you have some red aches at which time you can put in bigger pieces of wood. Good luck and enjoy I miss my fireplace.

Well dear - if it's a real fire:

Roll up some paper and place that in the grate - place small pieces of wood on top and then the coal.

One good match should set the whole thing burning nicely.
