My 20 + year old boiler occasionally makes a loud bang when it cycles on. I know that it works and the pilot is lit because my radiators immediately get hot. I am getting it serviced by a heating company this week but wanted to know what I was getting myself into...

It's not the cracking noise that my radiators make, I don't mind them singing to me-- it is a big bang as the pilot lights, sometimes the pilot lights quietly and sometimes it comes on with a bang.

You need to bleed your pipes. If you have a radiator system there should be two pipes at your boiler that you should let the water out so the steam will flow efficiently to your radiators. Open those pipes up, the water will be brown for a few them it wil be clear white, when all the water is out turn the pipes closed. Your Boiler will then put new water into it system and you should be GOOD for the winter season. You should do this before you turn off your boiler in the summer, when you turn on your boiler for the winter and during the winter cycle.

Not sure if your heating system has steam going to the radiators - but if so - it may be the steam coming into contact with water in the pipes - they collide adn make the banging noise that sounds liek someone hitting a hammer on the pipes. It goes on for aminute or so (until the steam and water have finished colliding!) then stops. If you do not have a steam system - not sure what it is.

When water evaporates it leaves a calcium deposit. After a time the calcium breaks off and makes a popcorn popping sound on the side of the metal. All your repair man and see if just emptying it will help.

I would have the gas company check the gas valve ,sounds like your gas valve didn't shut off right away when the pilot went out and the bang you heard was residual gas in the burner chamber lighting off when you lit the gas back up

there are a number of reason for it to bang you. one it could have air in the lines, another the circulator pump could be running after the the zone valve closes if you even have a zone valve. any way they are all minor problems.
