There are laws that govern your privacy. The law is called HIPPA. Unless you have signed a legal document giving your mother or some other person access to your health care information, your doctor would be breaking the law by discussing your health issues with your mom.

It's because of confidentiality; the doctor cannot release that kind of information about you to anyone else but you. It's considered private information and the doctor could get into huge trouble for releasing private information to anyone but his/her patient.

What you would need to do next time you see your gyn is to have them make a note on your chart that it is okay for the office to give details about why they are calling to your mother if you aren't home. You might also have to sign a piece of paper, giving them permission to do so.

It's a bit of a pain, but it's in the interest of keeping your information private and protected.

Because it is a HIPAA violation. This is a federal government rule that insures protected health information is kept confidential. A person can be sued if they violate this law
