Suppose that once upon a time there was a country where in good deeds were rewarded by a free market system with wealth, status, and power. Suppose that there was a contest between families to determine whose family could do the most good. Suppose after about 400 years most of the wealth, status and power was concentrated into the hands of those families who won this contest presumably by doing the most good. Suppose that after reviewing 400 years of history the vast majority of the inhabitants of this country realized that this contest was unfair to certain families because of their ethnic background or simply because of the colour of their skin. Suppose that for almost 300 years certain families were never compensated for the good deeds they had done because their labor was stolen from them by institutionalized slavery. Suppose that for about 100 years after that these same families were discriminated against; were denied fair and equal access to wealth, status and power; and continued to be denied the opportunity to compete fairly in the this contest to do good. Suppose that members of these very same families volunteered to serve their country in times of war and died for their country. Would you as an inhabitant of this country wish to do something to address this social injustice? Would you as an inhabitant of this country wish to win this contest to do good fair and square or would you be satisfied with being from a family that cheated by having a 400 year head start? As I understand it, Affirmative Action is doing something to address 400 years of social injustice suffered by certain families due to institutionalized slavery and or the denial of fair and equal access to wealth, status and power.

It would be a joke if affirmative action didn’t have such negative consequences on our productivity and fairness. There is nothing wrong with ensuring that discrimination doesn’t exist in hiring practices, or in the admissions process for education, or the eligibility for scholarships. However, the inertia that affirmative action policies have spawned has resulted in the discrimination AGAINST the qualified in favor of the underachiever who happens to be part of previously discriminated group. Success is sacrificed as a result and mediocrity is catapulted to undeserving fame, all to appease current sensitivities and to redress past wrongs that, by virtue of what they are, cannot be rectified.
To add insult to injury, affirmative action is not applied equal to the minority classes it is supposed to serve. It’s pretty much a well known fact that blacks and Hispanics benefit far more from affirmative action statutes than Asians, even though Asians are more of a minority than blacks or Hispanics, since they outnumber them in all census data.

Anyone that thinks Affirmative Action is not necessary and very much needed is living in a fantasy world.
I have personally known over 20 women that have experienced hostility in the workplace in male dominated engineering fields. Some of them were eventually even fired after complaining.
This is an atrocity in the 21st century and it happens a lot more than anyone knows.
I have an electrical engineering degree and my sister has a mechanical engineering degree. Both of us have experienced this.
My sister was a mechanical eng. for Nascar and was the only female in the research and development dept. I can not count how many times she called me while on her lunch hour upset and crying from being harassed. Btw, the only black person in that entire building was the receptionist.
Affirmative Action is needed now more than ever because there are still a lot of white males that make it clear they do NOT want females or minorities to 'intrude' on what they call a 'white man's job'.
Point is that taking away Affirmative Action is saying that you believe ppl will on their own level the playing field... this is just not true as history has repeatedly shown us.
Listen, I am not trying to be hard on your mentality. Studies have shown that most white males, not all but most, don't mean to discriminate. These studies have shown that it is human nature to be favorable to ppl like yourself. So, say for example you are interviewing some guy with two kids, same age, same interests versus some black woman you interviewed an hour before... it is human nature to for your subconscious to prefer the person more like yourself.
And as long as one group of ppl are in the most control, because of that human nature, we need things like Affirmative Action to counter that basic human nature.
That is IF you want a world of equality. There is more to gain from equality than your realize... less hate and division for one.

I think many here are confusing Affirmative Action and Racial quotas. Affirmative action is perfectly acceptable setting protections against discrimination, Setting goals and instituting programs to enable minorities all help counter the reality of racism. Racial quotas on the other hand or hard goals are racist by there nature. In example a program to tutor a minority to score better on SAT's would be acceptable a racial population quota for a college would not The sad fact is one enables one enfeebles an individual. Additionally laws preventing employment based solely on race are enabling law allowing hiring preference base solely on race alone are enfeebling.

definite! I accept as true with each and every thing you're saying. And the kicker is that the liberals do no longer look to get this. it relatively is ironic how the liberals declare to be the celebration that champions for social justice, yet then commits acts of criminal bigotry. Affirmative action is the definition of discrimination. It jogs my memory of the pre civil rights stream of the 1960's. Discrimination this is legalized. it relatively is disgusting. And there are people who relatively ask your self why i'm a conservative?

No, it is not the MOST racist policy ever. It is racist and it is unconstitutional, but it is not the MOST racist.
BeachBum, I guess that the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was the most utterly worthless, pointless piece of legislation ever enacted by Congress. That law wasn't worth the toilet paper it was written on, eh?

Affirmative Actions is government sanctioned racism, its the 21st century equivalent of the Jim Crow laws. It simply states that minorities are unable to compete on a level playing field. It calls into question their degrees. It is not good for them, or any American
