One could argue that chlorophyll is an organic or an inorganic compound. Because it has carbon bonded to hydrogen, C-H, it is organic. It is true that it contains magnesium, but magnesium is one inorganic ion among many atoms. On the other hand, the magnesium ion is the most important component, because magnesium mediates photosynthesis, whereas the organic porphyrin ring simply modulates the electronic environment of magnesium.
