We have a skunk, how do we get rid of it?

We have had a skunk family in our neighbor hood for almost 6 months. One skunk got killed by a dog and that was NASTY, but there are others I smell that nasty smell at least every other night! I have tried vinager outside and moth balls please what else can I try????

If you shoot the skunk, it will probably spray your yard - you have to have a perfect shot to the brain if you don't want the spray...

The best way to get rid of a skunk depends on whether you want the humane answer or the "other" answer...

The humane answer...

Purchase a live catch trap and catch the little bugger with some smelly bait (sardines work great). Once you have him, you can slowly and quietly slip the trap into a garbage bag and move the skunk to another locale (have the bag around the trap with just the end open - the skunk will like the privacy and it will be easier for you to enclose the trap in the bag). The skunk WILL smell awful but it will not fully spray if you are very careful. You'll want to transport the bag and enclosed skunk to its new home in the back of a truck, not in your trunk.

The other method is not as kind but it has less of a chance for you to get sprayed...

Attach a cap to a length of 3" PVC pipe 2' or longer. Bury the pipe in the ground at a 45 degree angle leaving ~2-3" above the ground. Fill the bottom of the pipe with about 6" of water and toss in a sardine or two (or something else quite smelly). The skunk will enter the pipe, slide to the bottom, and drown before it has time to release its glands. You can then just apply a cap to the end, dig it back up, and toss the whole thing in the garbage.

I don't know if it works but I was told so spray ammonia around the area you think he is staying and it will leave. Also you can stop a skunk from smelling by holding its nose. Seriously try the ammonia.
