When you're reading a book for pleasure (or literature for school, lol) most of them are in 3rd person. That is how you want to write. For example: you use your character's name and say what they did and why it was important. Never use I think or you would... If you tell what book you're reading and what your essay is to include, I can probably give you a better example. Hope this helps. From a former teacher. :)

It sounds much more convincing and professional when you DE-personalize it and subtract all usage of I, we my, etc. You just say In so in so's text, the alienated state of the individual is depicted by....(hope I am not confusing you--this is just an example).

Instead of saying "I think this person is saying..." you just omitt the "I" and be assertive. Say "This person is saying" or "This shows that..." It's hard to show examples since your question is a bit vague. Any sample sentences would help.
