An Enigma is a person of puzzling or contradictory character. Please let me know if anyone knows the answer!

He is considered by many to be an enigma because of his characteristics that are difficult to understand or make sense of. He was a strong proponent of human rights, and yet a slave owner. He spoke out against race-mixing, and yet had a long-time liaison with the slave Sally Hemings, and fathered several children by her (recently proven with DNA evidence).

Yet some think it is possible that he is misunderstood. Perhaps he was pressured by the times, perhaps his debts prevented him from freeing his slaves. Maybe things weren't so simple in his day. Maybe he began his affair with Sally Hemings long after speaking out against interracial relationships. We currently have no information to satisfy these questions.

No one completely understands these things about Thomas Jefferson, which is why he is viewed as an enigma today.
