A fighter jet is launched from an aircraft carrier with the aid of its own engines and a steam-powered catapult. The thrust of its engines is 2.1 105 N. In being launched from rest it moves through a distance of 87 m and has a kinetic energy of 4.5 107 J at lift-off. What is the work done on the jet by the catapult?

The total Ke is the same as the work done by both the jets and the catapult. Since the jets did
2.1*10^5 * 87 = 18,270,000J and the total Ke is 4.5*10^7J then the catapult must have done
4.5*10^7 - 1.827*10^7 = 2.673*10^7 Joules of work on the aircraft.

Use Force * distance to get the energy added by the engines. Then subtract that energy from the total kinetic energy at lift-off to give the amount of energy added by the catapult.
