If you are running multiple applications at the same time e.g. gaming and video editing, then yes, they would run much faster. If you were running a single application, then it depends on whether that application has been designed to run on 2 cores or just one. If it has, then yes, it too would run much faster. However, it is extremely difficult writing programs that run on 2 cores.
Having dual core basically means that you have two computing units that can handle separate tasks at the same time (i.e in parallel). For instance, a virus scanner runs unobtrusively in the background on one core, while applications such as Microsoft Word or Firefox run on the other core, without their speed being hampered.

No, it does not double the speed. You simply have two processors instead of one, which helps for multitasking. It is faster than a Core Solo, but not nearly double the speed.

Yes it is at least 40% faster because of the additional processor. Check if you really need it because of the additional investment. Good luck.
