1861 until 1865 and mostly around the Virginia area - thirteen "states" seceded from the Union to form the CSA - the Confederate States of America.
Initially the hostilities centred around the main seceder Virginia whose legislature decided they didn`t want to be told how to run their state by politicians in Washington (very close geographically to Virginia funnily enough LOL) and so decided to break away.
Despite what many people think ,the Civil War was not just about Slavery (many Union states had slaves still throughout the war).

The backstory of the war really started in 1860. When Abraham Lincoln won the bid for president, many in the south became suspicious that the election had been rigged. The southern states started thinking they were being kept out of important affairs and weren't having their say in the government.
So in 1861, the people in the south decided to withdraw from the Union and make their own government, where they could do as they pleased.
In February 1861, South Carolina, Mississppi, Florida, Alamaba, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas all pulled out of America and formed their own government, which they called the Confederate States of America.
So the northern army invaded the southern states to force them to come back into the union.
The two sides were the northeast states against the southern states. West Virginia, Ohio, and Tennesee were considered "border states."
The war raged on for four years. The north was losing their invasion for a long time. They resorted to burning farms, raiding villages, and destroying highways to break the south. In the end, they drove the south into the ground, and the war was over in 1865, with all the southern states coming back into the union.

Some people here have made small typos, 1861 to 1865 is the correct dates not 1961 to 1965.
PBS has a great web site on the American Civil war. It will do a better job of explaining the causes of the war that I can in a few short paragraphs.

1961-1965.
What caused it was the succession from 13 Southern States (sorry - that means the southern states elected to remove themselves from the union (the U.S.))
People think it was just over slavery - but that is not entirely true. If the South hadn't left the union, the war may have never happened and slavery may have persisted for many years. It was the succession that upsetted Abe Lincoln. he wanted to preserver the unity of the nation at all costs - which is why they went into war.

It was 1861 to 1865. The south started it to escape Congress's plan to take away the South's slaves and therefore their way of life.
Custer was in the first battle and the last. He accepted the surrender flag and was given the table on which Lee signed the surrender.
