I have heard it so many times I assumed it was true. It is put up or shut up time. Something so outragious would surely be on the internet. Give me a reference.

Just because you hear something repeatedly does not mean it is true and this is definitely not true.

gore did not invent the internet. a computer programmer wrote a program which, knowing how to use it, was able to send information between computers without having to buy special equipment.
having written it, and deciding not to use it for financial gain, he put out as public domain software which anyone could use. i don't know his name but i think he lived in california.
his software was the base for the internet system and has continued to expand the capabilities of the use of computers.
the name he gave it is world wide web and anyone can access it with a few simple keystrokes.

There is a fairly accurate account of what was said, in what context.

I believe Gore was referring more to his willingness in funding research towards development of the internet.

It's just that some people have nothing better to do with their lives than be complete jerks...

A lot of older people often mispeak when referring to internet related topics because they don't have a real good handle on what it consists of.

He said, "i took the initiative in creating the internet". Are you asking if he actually did invent it, or if he actuall said it?

yes, check out snopes. It says exactly what I said. And then they decide to interpret what he was trying to say.

Maybe it was a joke gone bad, like kerry.

The internet was invented in the 1960s for the military and Al Gore wishes he had something to do with it. You can't find the reference because it doesn't exist.

I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

He didn't invent it of course but he did help tremendously to boost the advancements of the internet to what we have today. I bet you didn't know that. That's why he said he invented it.
