basically, phone directories. Back in the day, good old paper phone books could be typed into databases and used - today, online or cd databases make it easier. Phone numbers, once published, are public information.

Also they can easily buy phone numbers sorted by demographics from all sorts of sources, too numerous to mention.

Ladies and Gentlemen. The correct answer is your friendly credit bureau. Anything you do that is attached to your credit report is for sale. You think it is private and that would be so nice, but the truth is not even close.

All 3 credit bureau's sell everything about you. A company only needs to tell them their demographic requirements and the credit bureau will take care of the rest. This B2B side of things is a billion dollar source of revenue for all 3 of the credit bureau's. So be careful on what you list anytime you apply for credit or buy a home. Because others are watching your every move.....Cheers to all!

Very often these days they use automatic dialers, so the phone numbers are not even from lists, although phone numbers that people have been requested be placed on the National Do Not Call List are programmed in and therefore not called.

That way no one, except those who have specifically requested not to be called, is missed! Much more all-encompassing than the old targeted marketing approaches.

there are information vendors, from the supermarket bonus card you fill out, to any contest you sign up for.
with the supermarkets they let you fill out a card, that enables you to get their products at a reduced price (bi-lo bonus card, ingles card, cvs pharmacy card ect) and in turn they take you informataion, provide it to their vendors, (and in turn they may sell it)
Also any contest you sign up for if you read the fine print it will show a "I hearby authorize you to disclose my information" and that enables the contest company to sell to your information to market people wanting to buy it, and in turn call and solicit you for your business....

rather evil i think, but it works for them.....
