it used to be the fastest way to get into your computer, was to email you a message, and attach a tiny program that would automatically install itself as soon as you opened the mail. the program would open up your computer to a porthole in the internet specificly designed for that program, and the person who had sent you the email would have saved this number, and logged into your computer with it. from their, they could move your mouse, type on your computer using their keyboard on their computer, no matter how far away or how close they were to you. the only good way to get rid of this kind of program would be to unplug your computer from your wall, unplug the internet from your computer, boot your computer back up, find the bad program, and uninstall it. most of the time, however, if the person sending you the email really wanted to hurt you, it took him absolutely no time at all to get into a DOS prompt and erase your hard drive.
today, its a little different. there are programs out today that arent quite viruses (although viruses can get inside your computer and control it), today there is a kind of "bug" called "malware". if you go to a bad website (my husband's computer got it from looking at a GIF image on ebay) it installed a bug on his computer that ALTERED windows itself, sending all kinds of information and files to an unknown source online, and opened his computer up for all kinds of viruses to be installed, although we thought we were protected with our firewall, and our virus scanner, as it turned out, our virus scanner turned out to be last years program, and while it protected us from all of last years viruses, it was no match for this awful ugly malware problem. it had gotten to the point where the computer froze, we unplugged it from the wall, and plugged it back in, got it to boot back up again, and in 15 minutes IT WOULD BE FROZEN AGAIN!! we didnt know what to do! we left it turned off, went to the store, bought a brand new virus scanning/firewall software package, MADE DOUBLE DOUBLE SURE THEY WERE THIS YEARS PROGRAMS, and installed them. it found 600 viruses. UGH. even then, there were many, many files that were very bad and still causing lots of problems that we couldnt contain, and couldent delete unless we went into safe mode. so we went to go into safe mode.... THE MALWARE HAD DISABLED SAFEMODE ENTIRELY! we had no way to delete all these bad files from our computer! they were just going to open up more portholes for more viruses to get in, and our problem would never be solved! we considered just throwing the computer away, as even if we formated our hard drive, there was a partitioin on the hard drive that windows would not let us format over, and we thought that all these bad files might be inside the partition, as the malware did alter windows itself.
we finally fixed the problem by just getting a new hardrive, and a new windows operating system, and stuck with our new virus scanning sofware, it turns out, the newest version of explorer blocks malware, and has a tool to even remove it, if the malware was installed after you had already got the new version of explorer. that sure would have helped us earlier.
so there are several ways that someone could be inside your computer. some i havent even discused as i dont know to much about them, and do not want to give you any incorrect information about the ones i dont know too much about. what i would do, if i were you, is make sure your virus scanning software is all up to date, (if it isnt, CA has a trial version thats free for a month, and its pretty good) install the CA, turn off your computer, unplug your internet connection, and power back on your computer, making sure your computer has no way to access the internet. if you cannot access the internet, than neither can all the bad bugs inside your computer. start up your virus scanning software, that you know is up to date, (make sure you've checked for updates, thats also a good thing to do before you power off and unplug the internet) and do a virus scan on your whole computer. that should bring at least a couple things up if you say your computer is acting funny. another thing to try, is a program called "spy sweeper", or "pest patrol" its not a virus scanning software, but it will scan your comptuer for things like spyware, looking for any and all programs or files on your comptuer that are making contact to another computer while on the internet without your permission. such as limewire, gator, or kazza (among many other pograms you might not have even realized were on your computer). from there, you can choose to delete or uninstall the files or programs, or just leave them there.
