The check engine light will not fail u, they may not take u but it wont fail u.. .. The test is basted of emission levels that are being put out by your truck... There is a chance that the check light is on due to a problem that may be related to a possable error somewhere along the fuel/spark/exhaust that could cause it to fail... Go to a local garage and have them hook your truck up to a code reader so they can establish the reason behind the check engine light... Then u will know if it in anyway related to a potental problem that will cause u trouble when getting smog-ed...
U can reset the comp by unplugging your bat for 15min or so, then reconect and see if light is still on.. I dont suggest this but it might get u in...

When you have a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp) 99% of the time it is due to a failure in the emissions system somewhere. The emissions place you took it to probably ran a test, it failed, then checked to see if your MIL light was even working. He may mean that your MIL lamp itself is burned out and is not telling you that your vehicle REALLY DOES have a problem with its emissions. The lights are simple to change out. Also, don't count on the emissions place telling you whats wrong and why it failed. They won't tell you. They want to do the work themselves. Part of the game.

the engine check light indicates a [problem with either the ECU or one of the sensors controlling the engines timing, fuel mixture, performance and fuel economy. therefor you most likely as the engine is not stalling be running too rich. This means burning too much fuel and failing the smog check.
Fix it ASAP as its also money you are wasting!!!!!!!!!!!
