try some vitamin e cream just a small amount, that way it'll nourish your lashes as well.

heyloo there huni,i find when i buy a mascara thats too thick,i put a small amount of Vaseline onto my eyelashs which is perfecty safe :) and stops bacteria getting into the mascara's case. I apply a small bit of vaseline and then glide the mascara wand over the eyelashes.
The vaseline coatings shud thin the mascara out a little without ruining or damaging the mascara.
Try this out huni!
I find a good mascara is a Collection 2000 Blue mascara. i have tryed hundreds of expensive mascaras and this one is 1.99 and is just as good as the Loreal Extension lashs for 9.99!
i cant be doing with cheap foundation tho :P
Anyways Good Luck Sugarrr!

I wounldn't mess around when it comes to the eyes. If you don't want to return the mascara then buy another one. But don't add anything to it. This was taken from the FDA web site:
"Serious injury from makeup is a rare occurrence, according to John Bailey, director of FDA's Office of Cosmetics and Colors. But it does happen. Good common sense and a few precautions can help consumers protect themselves against hazards associated with the misuse of cosmetics.
Never share makeup. Always use a new disposable applicator when sampling products at a cosmetics counter. Insist that salespersons clean container openings with alcohol before applying their contents to your skin.
Never add liquid to a product to bring back its original consistency. Adding other liquids could introduce bacteria that can easily grow out of control.
Stop using any product that causes an allergic reaction.
Throw away makeup if the color changes or an odor develops.
Preservatives degrade over time and may no longer be able to fight bacteria.
Do not use eye makeup if you have an eye infection. Throw away all products you were using when you discovered the infection.
Keep makeup out of sunlight. Light and heat can degrade preservatives.
Keep makeup containers tightly closed when not in use.
Never use aerosol beauty products near heat or while smoking because they can ignite. Hairsprays and powders may cause lung damage if inhaled regularly"

Leave it on the radiator overnight, should thin it down nicely. don't add any creams, tap water etc to it as they can react with the mascara and give you a nasty eye infection.
Alternatively depending on when you bought it, take it back and complain!

Wouldn't try tap water personally. I wear contact lenses and the opticians advise against using tap water as it can contain micro organisms.
I'd use a drop of boiled water for non waterproof mascara
and a little bit of E45 cream or similar for the waterproof stuff

It depends on whether it is water based (likely) or not.
I would (if I used mascara which I don't) return it to the shop or bin it. Is it worth giving yourself an eye infection because some fool undid it in the shop an exposed it to what ever has been floating around in the air in the shop?

try some ordinary tap water like you said to help get rid of the thickness. It worked for me in the past.

I would take it back to the store where you purchased it - exchange it for a new one!
"Make sure the mascara you are using is fresh. If it’s more than three or four months old, looks thick or smells funny, it’s time to pitch it. Although many new mascaras are designed not to clump, too much exposure to air can thicken any formula."

Firstly I'd go back to the shop and try to get a refund. You could thin it with water but this would be temporary as it would soon go lumpy.

I suggest not buying the most expensive brand when it comes to mascara. This is one of the few items where you can afford to be stingy! You have to throw it out after a few months anyway.
