Intel, they have always had the better hardware and with the core 2 duo's have just leapt ahead in the speed stakes. The AMD stuff is generally good and usually slightly cheaper but Intel have always had the advantage and invest a lot to keep it that way. Next year they will be releasing a quad core processor which will blow AMD out of the water.

AMD 64-Bit (Athlon)

or Pentium Core 2.

Both are fairly equal, but the core 2 Duo is faster (more expensive); I personally have an AMD Athlon 3700 and prefer it over a pentium 4.

Also consider that Pentium's perform 6 instructions per clock cycle wheras AMD perform 9 per cycle.

If you mean amd or pentium, then I would say amd, but if you meant amd or intel, I would definitely say intel, because of their Core 2 Duo processors. Even the mid range model - the E6600 is faster than the fastest amd dual core processor - the FX-62, and is something like £200 cheaper. And also they are eminently overclockable. People are able to overclock the 2.4GHz processor up to 4GHz, and easily up to 3.4GHz using the standard air cooler that comes with the processor.
And they are more efficient than the athlons, running at lower temperatures. I used to prefer athlons because they used to give you more power than pentiums for less money, but this Core 2 Duo is just awesome. I would definitely get one.

I say Intel. Here is why

Intel does not change it's socket often While AMD does.
System Builders prefer AMD because of better over clocking ability and power.

But if you want a cpu you can upgrade within a year or two, Intel is best. If you want raw power and don't care about upgrading cpu, AMD. It is cheaper to upgrade individual components then buy a new pc.

Personally for me it is Intel (or Pentium). Intel makes the chipsets for nearly all motherboards, even those using AMD processors. So this said, I believe Intel knows more about operating system architecture than their rivals.
But preferring Intel to AMD is like Ford vs Toyota, or Nike vs Titleist. It becomes a personal matter and everyone has his reason to believe that one is better than the other.

I have never purchased Intel chips for my computers - and I have always got a better bargain for the speed than I would have got with the Intel chips. I would 100% recommend AMD - don't believe the hype about Intel, do your own research - read the reviews!

Either one is great, Core 2 is even better.

Put more emphasis on your memory, video card, and motherboard quality before worrying about which processor you have. You can always upgrade to a faster cpu after prices slide :)
