use windows restore, or rollback the drivers. if it dose not acknolwledge the sound card still open the case and wiggle the sound card if it is not on the motherbord if wiggleing dose not work your sound card is bad you will need a new one, if so go here for a cheap one.

If it is built into the motherboard, you cannot delete it, and you would know it if you disabled it. Right-click My Computer, and then select Manage. Select Device Manager from the list on the left. Scroll down the stuff that pops up on the right untill you see something for sound. Click the plus sign right by it, and a bunch of stuff pops up. If you see a red X, it is disabled- right click the X and select Enable. If you see a Yellow ! there is a driver problem- right-click the ! and select Update Driver. If there is a Yellow ?, there is some other problem with it- Right-click the ? and select properties- it will say what is wrong with it.
If you see no symbols, it is possible you turned the volume all the way down or muted it without realizing it- Double click the speaker icon by your clock (if you don't see it, right-click the taskbar and select properties. Uncheck the box that says Hide Inactive Icons), then make sure it is not muted and all the volumes are all the way up.

Go to your control panel and select system, go to hardware profiles and select device manager, find your soundcard and get tis properties and see if you've managed to disable it, if it is disabled change its setting to enable this device and reboot windows, your pc should find the card as a new device and re-install it.
If it doesnt then there could be a failure of your soundcard if its not an integrated device, try someone elses before you buy a new one though. If your motherboard has integrated sound, on startup go into your motherboards BIOS and see if its disabled there.

Might I suggest that you download Belarc Advisor. It's a free utility.
Once you run the programme (it may take a few minutes, depending on your processor, etc.) it will show you, on screen, a page that contains the hardware (and software) on your computer.
If you scroll down to where it says Multimedia, you'll see the name of your sound card. You can either logon to the manufacturer's website and download drivers from there, or go to http://www.driverguide.com and register there. It's free, and it's simple to use. They have hundreds of thousands of drivers for various bits of hardware. (You obviously have to know the name of what it is you're looking for, and there may be different version numbers that you'll need.)

if u have yet another exterior sound card attempt putting the single u choose from the (controlpnl-->sound-->audio contraptions).decide for the single u choose. If that may no longer the case , bypass to device supervisor , uninstall the device. Then test for hardware variations, if residing house windows didnt provide the motive force then u have it on a CD which got here with ur motherboard(if the sound is geared up in), browse the motive force in the process the installation technique.

Well i can help you, a little bit. Go to a computer place and they'll put in a new one for you. It costs around $60, but it's worth it. I had the same problem twice, and that's what I did. But if you know your sound card, which you don't, you can try downloading it.

Restart your PC; press the key required to get into the BIOS (usually F2 or Esc or Del). Have a look in the BIOS to see if your sound card has been disabled. If it is inbuilt the BIOS should pick it up.

You must have deleted the supporting files. If you don't have the motherboard drivers and can't find them it might be easier just popping in a $25 Soundblaster.

Usually if you reboot, Windows XP will find it and it will be there again. You may need to check your sound settings to be sure it is not on mute.
