The tub is old, I assume it's procelain on steel or iron. I can't clean it thoroughly. I've tried a number of commercial products, like kaboom and I've tried filling it with water, adding bleach and letting it soak. Nothing seems to work.

Does anyone have a sure-fire solution?

That's supposed to be a statement. Yahoo added the "?" and made it a question -- in case you were going to make fun of my lack of punctuation skills.

If it's really bad stained you could use some Lysol toilet bowl cleaner. Wear gloves when using this stuff!!!! put some on a sponge and smear it all around the tub(let it soak for awhile). Rinse well!!! don't get this stuff on, floor clothing , nothing it will eat a whole in it. Read the precautions. It will work trust me. It even removes rust stains.

There is a product, called THE WORKS, its a spray on, you spray it in total coverage, and let it sit for a few minutes, then use a scrub pad.........this is a great product, its inexpensive, but not pleasant on the nose, we had a problem with rust in our water, and it left stains, this is the only thing that cleans it, we now have a water conditioning system, so no more rust. Hope this helps

I heard that white vinegar is a good cleaning agent and is also enviromentally safe. It's great for toilets and bathtubs, I also use it to clean windows and I think it works great, but my bathtub is like fiberglass/plasticy looking. I water it down a little for the windows though. Use your best judgment. I hope this idea helps.

my plumber just told me that the best way to get stains out of a porcelain toilet - and presumably a tub too- is to use aluminum oxide sand paper (it's porous and actually looks like window screen). you can get it at home depot or lowe's and it won't scratch...haven't tried it yet but i've tried other cleaners too to no avail...

Old tubs can become stained beyond cleaning. I would check into restoration of the porcelain. it can be refinished and look like new.
