First would be a good virus scanner:
http://www.kaspersky.com - Kaspersky
http://www.eset.com - Nod32
next would be a firewall,
http://www.zonelabs.com - Zone Alarm
http://www.sunbelt-software.com - Kerio
The next best thing is to trust no one assume that everyone is out to give you a computer virus. Most people get infected with a virus by accepting files from a friend that did not know they where infected with a virus to begin with. The next way people get infected is through the internet don't download files from sites you don't trust. The third way but not as effective as it used to be is floppy disks or maybe even a CD with an infected file, or any other type of media.

Buy any of the commercially available anti virus programs like "Norton" or "mcafee" and they will stop most any viruses. You will have to pay a yearly renewal fee to maintain your protection.Another option is to contact your Internet provider and see if they offer a one (1) year free protection package,I know that "comcast" does but I do not know about any of the others.

Use an anti-virus program (a good, FREE program is AVG) and (if your on high-speed) get a firewall like ZoneAlarm. Also, some anti-spyware programs like Ad-Aware and Windows Defender are helpful.
