First concentrate on learning all the chords. Learn both "regular" and bar chords because with the electric guitar bar chords will be used far more often. Once you have a good handle on the chords and being able to transition between them without loosing tempo you can start to play tablature "tabs" to your favorite songs. You can pull up tabs and chords to most any song of notoriety on line and practice them a little bit at a time until you have it down.

Avoid "Stairway to Heaven" and "Smoke on the Water" at all costs.

Eagles & Beatles are always good best to get comfortable with the chord progressions. I still remember how to play "Calling Dr Love" . . . . . . . . .

The old Fifties Rock tunes are pretty easy and definitly palitable to the ear even with quite a few mistakes.
They are all pretty similiar too... Pick one the others will follow rapidly.
Stay away from the ventures though... l8r for that....
